Sainte-Foy, an old village between Bourg-St-Maurice and Tignes with its own purpose-built station, is the region’s best-kept secret. This is where instructors from Val and Tignes go on their day off. Only three chair lifts serve 25km of quality pistes. It’s prime powder territory.
La Rosière, closer to Bourg, is a charming little resort on the Petit San Bernard pass (which is closed in winter) that marks the border to Italy. It links across the pass with purpose-built La Thuile: 37 lifts and 157km of piste. Hannibal probably came this way.
Valmorel, reached from Moûtiers, is an unsophisticated purpose-built village with good nursery slopes and modest intermediate skiing. Developed in the late 1970s, it has matured into a pleasant family destination with direct links to St-François-Longchamps in the neighbouring Maurienne Valley.
