The accomplished skier’s first requirement is an extensive ski area with lots of long runs. The second is a mountain with a steep enough gradient. The best places to find hair-raisingly steep descents, powder bowls and an awesome variety of terrain in the Alps are Chamonix, Val d’Isère, Verbier, Zermatt, (all Geneva airports) and St Anton (Zurich airport).

But it is Jackson Hole that leads the field in North America, with some of North America’s most challenging trails and steepest backcountry terrain. Much of the skiing is best described as ‘difficult’ to ‘very difficult’. You can even take part in a demanding Steep and Deep Camp run by the ski school, that provides a safe introduction to Jackson’s radical terrain. Jackson has many good hotels, led by the stylish Amangani set on a bluff halfway between Teton Village and Jackson town, and the piste-side Four Seasons Resort which has the best location of any hotel here.
