Non-Skiers

The world offers an almost endless choice of places to ski, but how do you pick the right holiday from the 75 skiing countries and their 6,000 resorts? Felice Hardy, co-author of The Great Skiing & Snowboarding Guide 2006, offers a guiding hand. You'll find flight and hotel deals in the Fact Box. You don’t have to ski to enjoy a holiday on snow, and non-skiers are a growing part of the winter holiday market. It’s not compulsory to catch the first and last lifts of the day to obtain maximum value from a holiday. Avoid the experts-only destinations where the entire populace migrates up the mountain daily, leaving a lonely ghost town behind them.

Similarly, dismiss purpose-built resorts whose sole raison d’être is skiing. Lovely scenery for winter walks is a must, as is a decent range of other activities.

USA

Aspen (Denver) is a true all-rounder with alternatives such as dog-sledding and hot-air ballooning. Some 200 shops and art galleries provide retail therapy.

Austria

Seefeld (Innsbruck) is a stylish Tyrolean town with medieval architecture, an extensive health centre and a pedestrianised high street. Innsbruck is just 40 minutes away by train. The Golden Roof is one of the city’s major landmarks, and the Olympic ski jump (when in use) should not be missed. Innsbruck’s historic restaurant is the 400-year-old Schwarzer Adler. Hotel A-Vita Viktoria in Seefeld has themed suites with names such as Laura Ashley, La Dolce Vita, and St Paul de Vence.
