Geneva, Lyon, and Chambéry are the hub airports. Driving time is up to three hours to Val d’Isère, two hours to Les Arcs or Courchevel. Altibus (www.altibus.com) and Alpski-bus (www.alpski-bus.com) run regular services from Geneva Airport, and Altibus also goes from central Chambéry to the Tarentaise resorts. The journey with Alpski-bus from Geneva to Méribel costs €111 return while the return fare to Val is €89.50. Local buses run from both Moûtiers and Bourg-St-Maurice railway stations.

A convenient, albeit more expensive, alternative is Airport Transfer Service (www.a-t-s.net), a collective taxi service from all the major airports in the Alps. You pay for your seat, and share the transfer with other people who are arriving at a similar time. You will be taken to your destination virtually direct, as there is a maximum of eight passengers per minibus. A shared transfer to Les Arcs or Méribel, for example, will cost from £55.43 one way, and you are delivered to your accommodation.

Eurostar offers a weekly overnight service leaving London Waterloo on Friday evening, arriving in the Tarentaise valley the following morning. The return train departs on Saturday evening. An additional daytime service departs from Waterloo on Saturday morning. Rail Europe (www.raileurope.co.uk) lists other train service on the French rail network.
The fast TGV (www.tgv.com) train goes between Lyon and both Moûtiers and Bourg St Maurice.
